Our Ongoing Research
Things That Make Us Go Hmm…?
Our Current Research Projects
Dry Mouth & Periodontal Disease Study
Prescription medications, radiation therapy, and systemic diseases are common factors that can contribute to a dry oral mouth, which is a risk factor for periodontal disease. Without adequate saliva, bacteria can colonize and stick to our teeth, cheeks, and tongue.
Even with this known link, there is a limited amount of research on the influence of dry mouth and periodontal health in patients who regularly receive periodontal maintenance.
Therefore, Taylor Sparrow (RDH) is looking to determine if patients with dry mouth have altered periodontal outcomes (things like probing depth, plaque percentage, sites that bleed upon gentle probing, gingival tissue appearance, among other factors).
Ultrasonics vs. Manual Instruments Study
A ‘deep cleaning’ is the primary treatment option for patients with periodontal disease. There are several instruments and methods available to your dental hygienist to complete this deep cleaning, however, there is some debate over which of these methods provide the best outcome in the least amount of time.
Therefore, our team of senior hygienists, Donna, Cathy, and Linda are conducting a study to compare the effectiveness of ultrasonic instruments alone compared to ultrasonics and hand instruments.
In a split-mouth design, we are comparing the periodontal outcomes after treatment with either methodology as well as the time it took to provide a thorough ‘deep clean’.
